What Is a "Shopify Payments" Charge on My Bank Statement?
Shopify Payments is Shopify's own payment system. When you buy from a Shopify store and they use Shopify Payments as their processor, the charge appears as 'Shopify Payments' or 'SP*' on your statement.
Plain-English explanation
Shopify Payments is the default payment processor built into Shopify stores. When a merchant enables Shopify Payments, card charges go through Shopify's payment rails. The statement descriptor should include the store name, but some banks truncate it to just 'Shopify Payments'.
Most common reasons this appears
- Purchase at an online Shopify store using their checkout
- Recurring subscription at a Shopify merchant
- One-time order for clothing, electronics, or digital products
How to verify this charge
- Search your email for any order confirmations around the charge date.
- Look for SP* or SHOPIFY in your statement and check the store name.
- Contact Shopify Partner support if you can't identify the merchant.
When to be concerned
- No order email exists for any recent online purchase.
- Multiple Shopify Payments charges you didn't authorize.
- Amount is suspiciously small (testing cards) or large.
